One Big Future: A Collective Vision for Viksit Bharat

The time to think about the future is now. The world as we currently see it is ever-changing. From self-driven cars to AI diagnosing cancer — the future is here. In this dynamic new world, as a nation we have the opportunity to expedite our journey of growth and development. The current generation is growing up in the age of a new digital era. India is home to the youngest population in the world. A young nation needs direction and systems that enable it to realise its potential.

For this reason, the future cannot be left to fate. As individuals and communities, we must envision the future we want and actively work towards designing it. Similarly, as a nation inching towards the goal of Viksit Bharat, having a shared narrative makes it easier to align institutions, policies, and people towards building that future.

Aspiration Is Not Enough

Much has already been said about the aspiration of building a developed India in the coming decades. But aspiration is not enough. It must be translated into systems that continuously ask the right questions about the future and help society move in that direction. Designing the future requires thinking in terms of ecosystems where policy, technology, society, and the economy interact with one another rather than operating in isolation.

Why I Joined One Big Future

“The future must ultimately serve the common person. Long-term thinking should not only benefit institutions or industries, it should translate into meaningful improvements in the everyday lives of citizens.”

This belief has propelled me to come on board as an advisor at One Big Future. A platform that is working towards the country’s long-term future. The vision behind OBF is bringing together leaders, practitioners, and institutions to shape the country’s future beyond short-term incentives. The objective is to bridge the gap between experts, implementers, and citizens to work towards a brand-new horizon.

The platform brings together experts, policymakers, practitioners, and citizens who are thinking about India’s long-term trajectory. The goal is not merely discussion. It is about identifying emerging challenges, examining evidence, and sharing insights that can inform decision-making across sectors. When people from different disciplines engage with one another, they can see connections that are often missed in isolated conversations.

Growth That Serves Every Citizen

At the heart of this effort is a simple principle: the future must ultimately serve the common person. Long-term thinking should not only benefit institutions or industries; it should translate into meaningful improvements in the everyday lives of citizens. This means evaluating policy choices, technological shifts, and economic transitions through a broader lens that considers their social consequences as well.

Economic well-being is an integral part of this conversation. Prosperity creates opportunity and the flexibility to make choices. However, economic progress on its own cannot propel a nation towards development. For people to benefit from growth, they must also be educated, healthy, and part of a harmonious social environment. If citizens are to be truly empowered, these dimensions must evolve together. A society that does not value equality risks weakening the economic foundations of progress. Similarly, technological advances that are not guided by thoughtful policy can hurt progress rather than stimulating it. The future, therefore, should be envisaged holistically, recognising that social, economic, ecological, and technological forces are deeply interconnected.

No single institution, individual, or organisation can drive such a transformation alone. This requires a collective effort, which is recognised by OBF. What we need is a platform where people working on different aspects of the future come together, exchange ideas, and build pathways from long-term thinking to real-time implementation. OBF strives to be that platform — one that identifies emerging opportunities, supports research that anticipates future challenges, and creates a space for collaboration. It will additionally act as a record of progress, documenting how ideas evolve into policies, innovations, and initiatives over time.

The Decades That Will Define Us

The next few decades in India will be defined by breakthroughs across sectors such as education, health, agriculture, and climate resilience. These transformations will be shaped by advances in artificial intelligence and digital technologies that cut across every domain of society. These developments have immense potential but also raise certain critical questions. Will the benefits reach each and every citizen? Will they create avenues for the larger good and for opportunity?

India’s future will not be shaped by a single idea or initiative. Our Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat heralds the idea that collective efforts — those that go beyond economic progress and look at societal wellbeing and good governance — will drive this growth. OBF provides the platform to invest time, knowledge, and energy to build upon this goal.

The invitation, therefore, is simple: participate in shaping the future. Contribute ideas, research, and experience. Engage in conversations that move beyond short-term debates and focus on the decades ahead. If enough of us work together with clarity of purpose, we can ensure that India’s future is not something that simply happens to us — it is something we consciously design for the benefit of every citizen.
