India Is Learning to Use AI, Harder Skill Is Judging It: Coursera Report

For India, the challenge is to turn mass AI training into sector knowledge, verification capability and measurable workplace outcomes.

AI learning is accelerating across the global workforce, but Coursera’s latest skills data suggests the next competitive advantage may lie less in using AI tools than in exercising judgement alongside them.

Artificial intelligence is changing not only the tools people use at work but also the skills that make them valuable. Coursera’s Job Skills Report 2026⁠, based on six million enterprise learners worldwide, reports a 234% year-on-year increase in generative-AI enrolments, underscoring the rapid growth in demand for AI skills. At the same time, the report points to a shift: workers are increasingly expected to supervise, validate and apply AI-generated outputs rather than produce every task themselves. 

For India, where AI skilling has become a national priority, the findings suggest the next challenge may not be teaching more people to use AI, but preparing them to use it with judgement. As AI becomes embedded across professions, the value of human work is increasingly shifting from producing information to evaluating and improving AI-generated outputs. 

What Is Changing?

In its Job Skills Report 2026, Coursera says generative AI enrolments among the platform’s six million enterprise learners rose 234% year-on-year, while critical-thinking enrolments grew a comparatively modest 120% across learners studying Data, IT and Software and Product Development. 

Coursera interprets these trends as data professionals moving away from routine database work towards supervising and validating AI-generated analysis. Rather than producing outputs themselves, they are increasingly expected to act as high-level auditors, identifying flawed assumptions and applying the contextual business understanding that AI lacks. 

Coursera also found 185% year-on-year growth in critical thinking enrolments among learners focusing on Generative AI, reflecting learners’ interest and investment in human judgement is rising alongside AI adoption. 

ManpowerGroup’s Global Talent Shortage Survey 2026 reported that 82% of employers in India report difficulty hiring skilled talent, with AI model and application development and AI literacy emerging among the hardest capabilities to recruit.

Why Does It Matter?

The report suggests that learning AI tools alone may not prepare workers for how AI is reshaping the workplace. As generative AI automates or assists routine coding, analysis and content generation, training programmes focused narrowly on prompting or technical workflows may quickly become outdated. Instead, workers will likely need capabilities AI cannot easily replace, including domain expertise, critical evaluation, cybersecurity, data management and accountability for AI-assisted decisions. Coursera’s finding that critical thinking enrolments are growing alongside AI learning reflects this shift.

Supporting this trend, a 2025 Microsoft Research study found that generative AI is changing the nature of critical thinking towards information verification and response integration rather than information production. The long-term competitive advantage may therefore lie less in mastering AI tools than in developing the judgement to apply, question and validate their outputs across different industries. 

What Happens Next?

The next phase of AI learning is likely to focus less on teaching people how to use individual tools and more on helping them apply AI within specific professions. As AI capabilities continue improving, prompting itself may become simpler, while the ability to interpret outputs, identify errors and make context-specific decisions becomes increasingly valuable. The indicator worth watching is whether learning platforms, universities and employers begin redesigning courses around practical deployment, judgement and sector expertise, rather than treating AI as a standalone technical subject that exists separately from the work it is intended to improve.

What Should India Do?

India’s AI skilling strategy should move beyond treating AI as a standalone technical discipline. As AI becomes embedded across industries, training programmes will need to combine AI fluency with judgement, domain expertise and sector-specific knowledge rather than focusing primarily on prompting or coding.

Future curricula should also strengthen complementary capabilities such as critical evaluation, cybersecurity, data management and accountability for AI-assisted decisions. Building these skills through closer collaboration between industry, universities and training providers could help ensure India’s workforce is prepared not only to use AI tools, but to deploy them responsibly and effectively in real-world professional settings.
